GALEN SUMMER

BIOGRAPHY

Born on an organic farm in the Pacific Northwest, Galen spent his early years sleeping in a banana box before embarking on a quaint rural childhood in Western Massachusetts. By twelve years old, he was operating a Sony S-VHS camcorder and assaulting the local Cable Access airwaves with a variety show that featured clay-animated aliens, unlicensed Aerosmith videos, and kung fu battles. While attending Boston University’s College of Communication, he made his first foray into documentary with a 16mm short about a kazoo-playing virtuoso who busked in the subway. The story was entirely fabricated.

In 2008, Galen directed Lessons from a Tailor, about renowned Brooklyn tailor Martin Greenfield. He then directed a series of short documentaries for The New York City Ballet, which were featured by the The New York Times, The Atlantic, and The Huffington Post, proving definitively that ballet was not dead. In 2014, he created a film for Downy about the power of hugging, which was viewed millions of times, likely on smartphones in laundromats all over the country.

In 2015, Galen won an AICP Next Award for his work on CVS Health's #OneGoodReason campaign, a series of emotional stories about people struggling to quit smoking. His most recent work includes spots for Droga5’s celebrated #ThisIsWholesome campaign for Honey Maid. In addition to commercial gigs, Galen works on various personal film projects, such as his upcoming documentary about the controversial late-70s world of NFL cheerleading. He lives in Brooklyn and still sleeps in a banana box.
